GOD first....Heavenly Father, we sometimes are questioning our worth or the worth of others. It seems that we judge others by their riches, skills, or our productivity. We know when we try to earn our salvation, Lord, we already know it is a free gift from You. Help us to live to this gift and nurture and share it with others because material things are only human standards. But Your gifts come to us freely every day. We pray in the name of our dear Savior, Jesus. Amen.
Pray for those who are grieving, ill, suffering, or are in harm's way.
'Do you like music?' 'Of course I do. I have a zither at home.'
'Really? I have a brother at home.'
'No. You don't understand. A zither is a lyre.'
'Well, my brother is a liar too.'
Koffee Klatch was full of old memories as always. This past Thursday wasn't any different. Larry S. said that he had a conversation with Edith Stratman Pulscek this past week. Everybody's ears perked up as he reported some of the conversation he had while thanking her for sending a contribution to the Nordheim School Foundation. Edith lives in Kansas City, Mo. and her sister, Audry, lives in Nebraska but was with her daughter in New York helping out. Both of the Stratman girls grew up near Cabexa on the Paul & Elenora Stratman farm across the road from the Otto and Myrtle Janssen place, which was out there by the Voelkel, Butler, Ckodre, Koehler, and many others – just to name a few.
With 15 people, the conversations turned into so many directions, and my bad hearing, and lip reading; four of five conversations erupted at once into memories of those who suddenly had to talk and ask questions. It seemed that everybody had to talk at once. Edith gets the Nordheim News via my column every week. I have had the idea of retiring, but many old Nordheimers and acquaintances urge me to keep writing. So if I get something wrong, don't blame me because I can't remember names and places or gossip about people anymore. My “can do” and my “want to” don't work as good as they once did.
Often, people ask me what is going on in Nordheim lately. Some ask about the Broadway Bar. Is it going to open soon? How is Lilie's Cafe doing? Is there somebody going to open Edgar & Gladys Cafe soon? Do birds fly south for the winter? The air is full of rumors, about as many as cats and dogs that live in town.
The Nordheim High School Track is nearing completion as the track lanes were marked this past week. Looking good. Should be open by the time Track and Field competition starts next few months. Right now, it's all Cross Country running competition and our students are doing well as most of them are young. Give them a few more years and some of them will make headlines. Next comes Basket Ball, both boys and girls will compete with other schools in the area. Before that, there will be the Nordheim FFA Stock Show in January. May Feast in Nordheim at the Nordheim Shooting Club and Tractor Pull. Young at Heart once a month. Lighting of the Christmas Tree on Broadway. Fire Department, Museum, City, and roadwork on Highway 72. So many things going on it's hard to keep up.
Woke up at 2 a.m. this morning as my Lola jumped up and started barking at the front door. Heard a voice and thought one of my daughters had come in but when I got up and got decent, I didn't see or hear anyone or anything. Went back to bed and while thinking of all the things I still needed to do, well, I got up and went to my desk and started writing. Couldn't sleep anymore anyway. Now it's past 4:30 a.m. Might as well stay up, make some coffee, soak a few ginger snaps, see what's on the TV. Maybe catch a nap before heading to Cuero Wellness Center before sunrise so the sun won't blind me while going there. Will see the moon go down and the sun rise this morning while the weather is perfect. Still no rain but life goes on. See you next week.
