Football family making special memories this season

A unique dynamic takes to the field each week for the Wildcats. Brothers Ryan Knostman Jr. and Brayden Knostman are getting the special experience of playing on the field alongside each other under Friday Night Lights. Ryan Knostman Jr. is a returning starter for the Wildcats and his younger brother, sophomore Brayden Knostman debuted his abilities for the varsity squad this year. To add to the dynamic both brothers are playing under the tutelage of their father Ryan Knostman the current athletic director and head football coach.

To add to the dynamic both brothers are playing under the tutelage of their father Ryan Knostman the current athletic director and head football coach.

In 2004, the Wildcats had the same scenario with two brothers playing for their father. Athletic Director Rusty Buzzard coached his two sons Austin Buzzard and Bronson Buzzard. The 2004 team combined for a 11-3 record defeating George West, Gervin Academy, Runge, Louise, Poth, Jourdanton, Kenedy, Karnes City, Bloomington, Refugio, Schulenburg, and Skidmore-Tynan before succumbing to the Lexington Eagles in the third round of the UIL 2A football playoffs.

This year's team has been off to a great start and looks on pace to create a great season similar to 2004. So far, they have a 6-1 record and are 2-0 in 2A District 15 play.

“What is most exciting is that the guys want more. I believe we have gotten better every week and that is a testament to their determination to get better day in and day out,” Knostman said.

When it comes to coaching his own two, Knostman commented, “I am very thankful to have this opportunity and I know I need to cherish every moment. It is something I have looked forward to since the moment they were born.”

Most teammates endure experiences that bring them close enough to be family, but in this case these three get to share a special chance to create memories that they can reflect on indefinitely.

Although playing for your dad could lead to a set of challenges, both seem to be enjoying the experience.

“Playing for dad is a special experience,” Knostman Jr said. “He’s tough on us, but it’s because he knows what we’re capable of, and he pushes us to reach our potential.”

“It makes it even more fun,” Brayden said, “because we have this connection on and off the field. We hold each other accountable, and we know we have each other’s backs.”

“We’ve grown up playing together, and now, getting to do it at the high school level with Dad leading the way, there’s nothing better,” Knosman Jr. said.

Coach Duprie is a recent addition to the Wildcat staff and his son Calvin Duprie is also an intricate part of the team this year. Coincidentally, the 2004 team also had two assistant coaches with sons playing as Coach Doug Patton and Coach Mike Royce coached their sons Doug Patton Jr. and Mathew Royce, respectively. There seem to be several similarities between the team from twenty years ago and this one. Fans hope that this year's team finds the same success.
