Weiner dogs, paratroopers and everything in between

GOD first...Heavenly Father, we, who are still unable to find answers on how to pray, we know there are so many ways. All we need to do is simply open our hearts and pray no matter what our needs are. Pray in the dark, the brightest sunlight, with somebody, in solitude, or while in silent places. Our voices will be heard because we know You will hear us no matter where we are or what we're doing. Listen to us Lord when we pray in the name of our dear Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. You work in wondrous ways.

Koffee Klatch was very sparse this week. Only 10 showed up as the other usuals had other places to go. Larry was busy at the school reading scary Halloween Stories along with Ronda, Matt, Roberta, Dorthy, Diedre, and Ms. Flores, who also read stories to children in grades K thru 5th grades. Mothers at home were still trying to get their kids to go to sleep tonight.

The second block of Nordheim, on Thursday evening, was the scene of Halloween activity as was the case of other Halloween Days of the past. There were some 20 hosts greeters lined up on both sides of Broadway giving out candy to an army of kids, who were dressed in scary costumes as Trick or Treaters, passed in review and who brought bags and past easter baskets to be filled. The Ckodre twins were a big hit as weiner dogs. One of the twins was the head and the other was the rear end with a spring in between, while one led and the other followed. A big dinosaur was the scariest as it was over 7ft. tall. Mothers of the Junior Class served Frito Pies, cookies/ cupcakes/ and drinks at the old firestation and will donate the sales to the Junior Class. It was a way to keep all the trick or treaters from going from house to house and waking up all the dogs in the neighborhood.

One mother commented that her kids will be hyper until all the candy is gone. That is if she can get them to go to bed tonight.

I couldn't sleep the other night remembering some of the stories I came across in my younger years. As the older child, I didn't have anyone my age to play with and one day I was wandering around with nothing to do. I just happened to go by the tractor shed and inside I saw dad's tractor with a brand new IH umbrella my aunt Lillie gave him to keep out of the sun. She was a stickler on that subject. I remember soldiers jumping out of airplanes in some of the movies during WW2. There was this big hay rack nearby and being a kid with nothing to do, I devised a plan to take the umbrella off the tractor and carry it over to the high hay rack. The tall ladder was still against the side of the hay rack and climbing up it with the umbrella was accomplished. It sure did look a long way down from up there. Almost backed down on my plan but as I said 'Geronamo!' I jumped. To this day, I wish I had never seen that umbrella. On the way down, the umbrella unfolded. Instead of making shade, it was now a rain catcher and the only pain I suffered was my dignity. After taking the umbrella back to the tractor shed and putting it back on the tractor, I was suddenly overcome by fear. I could hear dad coming back from town and I quickly ran down to the river and back behind the barn when I saw daddy coming back out of the tractor shed going over to the peach tree and cutting a good size limb from it. That's when I ran down to the falls as he was calling my name. I figured I could say I didn't hear him because of the noise the falls made, when he found me. All the way back to the house between having my dignity feeling the switches' each stroke, and having dad thinking 'What the hell am I ever going to do with this kid?' He probably was wishing he could go back to the doctor and get his money back and swear he was given the wrong kid at my birth. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

See you next week!
