Memorial Day different from other veteran holidays

Wow, six months have come and gone since my swearing in the Office of Cuero Mayor. Today is Veterans Day, a day to honor all those who have retired or served honorably in the Nation’s military, someone who at some time in their life, signed a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount up to and including, his/ her life.

Thank you to all our Veterans!!

I was asked the other day to explain the difference between Armed Forces Day, Veterans Day and Memorial Day: Armed Forces Day pays tribute to the men and women who serve in all six branches of our military and acknowledges their dedication, sacrifices, and the pivotal role they play in safeguarding our nation’s interests, security and ideals. It is appropriate to say Happy Armed Forces Day and thank you for your service.

Veterans Day honors retired and honorably discharged individuals. It is appropriate to say Happy Veterans Day or thank you for your service.

Memorial Day honors US military personnel who died in service to the United States, ‘All gave some, some gave all.” It is not appropriate to say happy Memorial Day or thank you for your service.

On October 28, I visited with Senator Lois Kolkhorst, District 18, who represents Cuero in the Texas legislature. We met for about two hours, discussed Cuero’s future and items of interest which will be discussed in the upcoming 89th Legislature Session which starts on January 14 and ends on June 2nd 2025.

On 29 October, I attended the retirement event for Sharon Weber, Executive Director for the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum. Ms. Weber retired after 43 years of faithfully serving her community. Happy retirement Sharon, may the Good Lord bless and protect you and your family in your future endeavors!!

On 5 November, I convened the first meeting of the Mayor’s Youth Council. I am excited to see how the inaugural year will go, and the students are excited!!! More to follow.

On 9 November, Velma and I attended the Cuero ISD Foundation’s Concert for Classrooms 2025 at the Cuero Performing Arts Center. The Bee Gees’ music took me back to my high school days. I met a few folks from the surrounding area, Weesatche, Thomaston and I was invited to enchiladas on Dec 19th in Thomaston.

Christmas in the Park is almost ready for its yearly debut, please visit Cuero’s Christmas downtown on December 13 and 14.
