Friday, Nov. 8 Yorktown faced off against the Shiner Comanches. The Wildcats drop to 3-2 after losing back-to-back games to conclude district play.
Yorktown accumulated 145 total yards of offense. They carried the ball 25 times for 68 rushing yards with 2 touchdowns and had 13 catches out of 21 attempts with 1 interception for a total of 77 passing yards. The final score against Shiner was a loss, 54-13.
Highlights include a three yard rushing touchdown by Brody Metting that came in the second period.
The Wildcats trailed 21-0 after the first quarter. Shiner scored off of a 31 yard pass from Carson Schuette to receiver Jacob Nerada with 10:39 on the clock and then when quarterback Schuette punched in from the one yard line and again on an eight yard run by Caleb Lehnert.
At 11:10 of the second quarter, Metting rushed into the endzone. The pass for the two point conversion was incomplete. Schuette connected with Boe Boehm on a 19 yard throw to extend the lead, however the Comanche extra point was unsuccessful. Tyler Harvey scored on a nine yard run and then Kyle Adamek recorded a 75 yard fumble return to end the half, 6-41.
Shiner then scored one touchdown per quarter during the second half. Once with Caleb Cowen punching in from three yards back followed by a rushing touchdown by Clayton Fric, 54-6. Late in the game the Comanches decided to go for it on fourth down which resulted in giving the ball to the Wildcats on the ten yard line in the red zone. The Wildcats made the best of the opportunity, scoring late in the game. With Brayden Knostman at the quarterback position, David Williams was handed the ball and scampered into the endzone on a ten yard run, 54-13.
“I was real proud of how we played, how we fought the first half. Shiner is a great football team but like I explained at half. The screen that they intercepted was a play where the player just happened to be there and then the last play at the half was a scoop and score and really without those potentially it could have been 28-14 with us getting the ball at the start of the second half. We are a good football team, too. I want us to believe in ourselves. The last two weeks we have played two really, really good teams, but I believe we are pretty good, too.” Head Coach Ryan Knostman said.
The Wildcats are 7-3 overall and 3-2 in district. They will look to make a run in 2A Division II. Their first matchup is scheduled to be against Ben Bolt.
