The Cuero Gobbler’s season has come to an end at the hand of the Wimberley Texans. The Texans defeated the Gobblers 69-28 last Friday at UFCU Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos in the Regional Semifinals.
“We had a good season. I wish we could’ve gone longer, but we didn’t get the outcome we wanted,” senior Tony Perez said. “I learned a lot and grew a lot with this team and they will be my family forever. We have an amazing coaching staff. I couldn’t have asked for a better coaching staff.”
The Texans jumped out to a 14-0 lead to open up the contest. Quarterback Cody Stoever found Bryson Anderson in the flats on the second play of the game and Anderson raced 79 yards for the touchdown. Stoever would add another rushing touchdown a few minutes later.
The Gobblers would then score their first touchdown of the night. After driving inside the 10, the Texans defense stood up, forcing a 4th and 5. Jaxxon Marie connected with Walker Dietze for a score, making it 14-7.
The duel-threat Stoever marched the Texans back into scoring position. He then found Jace Morales from 16 yards out to make the score 21-7 near the end of the first quarter. On the Gobbler’s drive, Texan defensive back Jace Cutrona intercepted a Marie pass. He returned it to the Gobblers 30, putting Wimberley back in scoring range.
A couple of plays later Stoever found Morales again, this time from 25 yards out. The score was 28-7 early in the second quarter.
The Gobbler’s next possession started with a 40 yard run by Marie. A few plays later he hit Tony Perez from four yards out to trim the lead. The score was 2814.
The Gobblers could not find an answer for the air attack of the Texans. Stoever threw his third touchdown of the game to Nolan Waida. The score was 35-14 with just under two minutes to play until halftime.
The Gobblers ran the two-minute drill to perfection. After passes from Marie to Perez and Hernandez and a few Davyon Varela runs, Marie threw a perfect strike, in between three defenders, that found his target, Brayden Hernandez for the touchdown. The score was 3521 with :16 seconds left before halftime. Unfortunately Marie was injured and would be sidelined for the rest of the game.
Cuero opened the third quarter with the ball. However, disaster would strike, when Jayce Guajardo’s pass was intercepted by linebacker Ty Thames, who returned the pick 55 yards for a touchdown, making it 42-21.
The Gobblers struggled to move the ball throughout the remainder of the contest, turning the ball over on downs several times, giving Wimberley a short field.
Stoever would capitalize each time. He found Thames for a 44 yard touchdown and ran for another himself, making the score 56-21 going into the fourth quarter.
The Gobblers scored their final touchdown on a Brayden Hernandez kickoff return. The score was 56-28.
Wimberley added touchdown runs from Jace Belanger and Jackson Parker to finish out the scoring in the fourth quarter. The final score was 69-28.
The Gobblers had a great season and finished 9-4, advancing to the Regional Semifinals for a second straight year.
“God’s timing is the best timing,” senior Hayden Carter said. If we weren’t supposed to win, I still cherish the bonds, connections, and brotherhood along the way.”
