The long-awaited re-routing of FM 240 away from the Westhoff school campus has officially begun. Officials used shovels, signed by students, to break ground on November 25 at the new location. When complete, 18-wheelers and other heavy road traffic will no longer roll by the Westhoff school campus.
'There were dangers of oil spills, vehicle rollovers, and chemical spills,' Precinct 1 Commissioner Ryan Valera said.
This project has come to fruition after ten years of work, which included acquiring documentation for the property title, clarifying its boundaries, conducting wildlife studies, civil engineering assessments, and securing financial funding.
“The Westhoff area of the county is in the heart of the Eagle Ford Shale. Therefore, 77 to 82 % of the tax dollars dedicated to this project have been raised from corporate oil and gas entities and royalty owners,” County Judge Daryl Fowler said.
The bypass is expected to take three to four months to finish. It will become Buenjes Street and will have designation as a street with “No Thru Traffic.”
