Buck stops at Sheriff’s door for no-show charge

DeWitt County Commissioners heard from Sheriff Carl Bowen at their meeting on November 25 about a hotel charge incurred by a former employee who did not attend training. Bowen had previously asked the county to pay the $171. 35, but withdrew that request.

DeWitt County Commissioners heard from Sheriff Carl Bowen at their meeting on November 25 about a hotel charge incurred by a former employee who did not attend training. Bowen had previously asked the county to pay the $171. 35, but withdrew that request.

“I came to the conclusion that this is not the fault of the taxpayer, but this is a fault of the practice,” Bowen said. “I was elected to be responsible. So, I would like to withdraw my request that the county pay $171.35. That would be paid by me.” In response to this incident, the Sheriff's Office canceled the credit card and implemented a new procedure to prevent similar issues in the future. The Commissioners Court decided to take 'No Action' on the matter.

In other business the court approved an appointment to the De-Witt County Child Welfare Board and accepted a land donation in Precinct 2.

Jacque Mitchell Approved to DeWitt County Child Welfare Board

Kati Klores, chair of the DeWitt County Welfare Board, requested Jacque Mitchell be appointed to the DeWitt County Child Welfare Board, which the Commissioners approved.

“She (Mitchell) brings a lot of positive assets to our group,” Kati Klores said.

“It’s always a good thing when you have warm hearts and open arms and busy hands for volunteer organizations. Thank you for being willing to serve,” said Fowler.

Donation Parcel Deed from Paschetag Limited Partnership

Paschetag Limited Partnership donated a deed for a surface area only to DeWitt County for a parcel measuring 0.4082 acres, located in Precinct 2 and part of the Samuel P. Middleton ¼ league. This land will be utilized for authorized public purposes.

The closing costs and expenses related to the donation will not exceed $4,000. The donation was fortunate as it came at a low cost.

“It is very rare that we receive such contributions,” County Judge Fowler said.

The next Commissioners Court meetings will be held Monday, December 9, at 9 a.m. and Thursday, December 19, at 9 a.m.
