A different ‘board of education’ applied in ages past

GOD first...Heavenly Father, we thank You for the many blessings You continue to pour upon us. Your power is so great and our faith is so weak. We want so much to be the things You want us to be and do the right things You want us to do. Yet, we seem not to reach our goals and forget that You are the one that makes it all possible if only we will but follow Thy will in all things. Strengthen us Lord. Help us to go forth and serve You better. In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Pray for those who are ill, suffering, grieving, or are in harms' way.

Two men were in jail. A man asked his fellow jail inmate, 'What did you do?'

He said, 'I shot and killed my wife.'

'How long will you be in jail?'

'A month.' 'A month for killing your wife?'

'Right. Then I will be hung!'

Ran across this item that I put in the paper a long time ago: Walter Busby was an Ag. teacher in Nordheim and he told me a story about a football game that was being played in Tilden by Nordheim's 8-man football team: Tilden was ahead of Nordheim by just a few points with one play left to end the game. But for some reason, a Tilden player ran a pass play and Kermit Koehler intercepted the ball and ran all the way for a touchdown and won the game for Nordheim. Kermit was a hero for a week and all the girls at school made all the other boys jealous.

Mr. Busby didn't tell me this, but he also got respect when he whittled a 'board of education' out of a two-by-four down to look like a flat stirring paddle that had holes drilled in the other end to make a whistling sound as it was applied to the rear end of a student. He always kept it handy and used sparingly but effectively. I bet Kermit will remember that too.

A history of 'The Amos & Andy Cafe” in Nordheim Emelie Mullens starts her story thusly: When she bought the place originally, it was stuffed with hay. Her and her partner, Leona Krause, had to clean out the hay and fix up the place before they made it into the cafe. According to records, they opened on Feb. 19, 1931. Emelie said that at first, some of the girls she hired to help in the cafe that came from the country would stay upstairs when the weather was bad and stay overnight. I remember Gladys Mueller talking about that. Gladys also said that she and Lillian Woods also helped operate the switchboard too, sometimes. Someone said that he thought that Bob Riedel also had a domino hall upstairs at one time. Also heard that perhaps Alfred Zedler serenaded the town on his trumpet from the balcony of the place at one time. So much of this history has been lost and forgotten. But interesting if true. Lindy Voelkel said that there were a lot of bull sessions going on in the cafe where Buddy Moore, Hootie Tips, Everest Kolodziejczyk, Alvin Huck. Lindy Voelkel, E.D. Janssen, Dr. Scheffler, Harold Stirl, and so many others would come to drink coffee and catch up on the latest. Sorta like the Dairy Queen of the past and like the Kaffee Klatch is now. Lindy also said, jokingly, that the reason the building is tilted that way is because the cash register was on that side. She continued to operate the business until September 1989. It's still leaning to this day.

Prayers have been answered. Thank You Lord. Even though it was only a half inch with more to come, it really was a blessing. It certainly put a halt to the construction along the highway.

Our neighbor and first cousin, Wayne Buesing passed away last week after a short illness. He was faithful in sharing in the community in various organizations, including the Nordheim Volunteer Fire Department as a member for many years. We offer condolences to his family and friends. See you next week.
