All the orphan canines and felines at Pet Adoptions of Cuero are making a list and checking in twice in hopes that St. Nick - and all the 'pet friends' in the community - will remember them this holiday season.
The rescue and shelter has gone through a very trying year of so many pets being abandoned, more and more unwanted litters of kittens and puppies left by the roadside, too many long term pets being 'turned in' because of lifestyle or living arrangements being altered, seniors passing and no future home was planned for their pets, and the pet food costs have risen a lot.
The PAOC shelter inventory book for 'intakes' as of December 15 was a total of 424 animals - an amazing number for a non profit small town facility. As required all pets received immediate vet attention - shots, health tests, microchipped, flea treatments and at maturity spay or neuter. The vet work alone is over 50% of the monthly budget and that's for 'healthy' animals. But many of the pets PAOC took in required life saving vet work - broken legs, dogs mauled, infections, flea mange, auto accidents and misc. cancers and growths that needed to be removed.
