After the public hearing on Norma’s House, the Cuero City Council discussed ongoing issues such as the allowance of golf carts on public roads, a tree-planting project and council chamber renovations during its regular meeting on December 9th,.

Golf carts

The Council has approved the contract for the construction of an additional golf cart rental building, awarding the project to South Central Wall System LLC. This new golf cart shed will be built on the north side of the existing shed and will provide 22 new cart spaces. Currently, there are 20 individuals on the waiting list for golf cart rentals.

The Council also considered a draft ordinance regarding the use of golf carts and off-highway vehicles (including all-terrain vehicles and utility vehicles) on public streets within the City of Cuero. The Council agreed to move forward with the ordinance, authorizing City Attorney James Crain III to finalize the discussed changes for the first reading. All council members were in agreement, with the exception of District 3 Councilman Tony Allen, who voted “nay.” “The fact is that you cannot match a 1000-pound vehicle with a 4000-pound vehicle and come out a winner,” Tony Allen said.

Tree-planting project

The Repsol Foundation is granting $40,000 for a tree-planting project. While discussions are currently in their early stages, the Council is looking at potential planting locations, water sources, and strategies for the project. A site visit is scheduled for December 17th, with the actual planting set to take place on February 20th. This initiative aligns with the 'Keep Cuero Beautiful' program and the 'Tree Board.'

The City of Cuero has been recertified as a Monarch Butterfly City and has achieved the Leadership Circle status.

Chamber and Conference rooms

Benjamin Gifford from James Teleco pre-sented projection options for the Chamber and Conference Rooms. Both quotes 6115 and 6111 were for the upgrades of the Council Chamber displays, respectively $19,216.00 for an 85” display and $23,716.00 for a 98” display. Quote 6085 of $$9,151 was for the Conference Room 75” display. The Council approved moving forward with the 98” display.

Economic Development Workshop

Even feeling under the weather, Executive Director Maggie Cromeens gave a report that she will host the workshop titled 'Understanding the Economic Development Process,” which will be led by Alysia Cook of Opportunity Strategies LLC.

“We are all interlinked. This workshop will improve communication between the City Council and CDC,” Maggie said.

The purpose of this workshop is to equip the Cuero Development Corporation board and other local leaders with the tools necessary for making effective and efficient decisions in economic development. The Council approved participation in an economic development workshop scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

New Recycling Signs

Cheryl Merzbacher, the Environmental Services Superintendent, submitted a request for a resolution to apply for a grant from the Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission in the amount of $830 to fund two signs. The first sign will measure 4 feet by 10.5 feet and will provide instructions on recycling paper, plastic, and tin, clearly indicating what can and cannot be recycled. The second sign will measure 5 feet by 3 feet and will specifically focus on paper recycling, stating that plastic feed sacks are not acceptable. The Council has approved this request.

Appointments and reappointments

In the consent agenda, the Council approved the appointment of William Nami to the Zoning Board of Adjustments and the reappointment of Monica Fuqua to the Library Board.

A special meeting will be held on December 19th at noon and a regular meeting will be on January 13.
