Kitty Kats open District 2-0

The Yorktown Kitty Kats Varsity Basketball team opened up District 31-2A action this past week with two solid victories. On Tuesday, December 10, Yorktown traveled to Woodsboro to take on the Lady Eagles.The Kitty Kats jumped out to an early 8-3 lead before Woodsboro cut the lead to 12-9 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Yorktown outscored the Lady Eagles, 12-7, to take a 24-16 halftime lead. In the second half, the Kitty Kats scored 24 points to 16 for Woodboro, as Yorktown came away with the 48-32 win. Freshman Palyn Koopmann led the Kitty Kats with 11 points and four assists. Senior Laynie Boyd added eight points, while sophomore Gracie Stehling had eight points to go along with 13 rebounds. Senior Sydnie Krueger pulled down nine rebounds and scored seven points.

On Friday, December 13, 2024, Yorktown hosted the Three Rivers Lady Bulldogs. In a fast-paced first quarter, the Kitty Kats took a 13-5 lead before expanding their lead to 20-10 at halftime. In the third quarter, Three Rivers outscored Yorktown, 6-5, and the Kitty Kats led 25-16 going into the final period. In the fourth quarter, Yorktown exploded for 17 points,while holding the Lady Bulldogs to four, as the Kitty Kats took the 42-20 victory. Koopmann had a double- double with 14 points and an impressive 16 rebounds. Senior Nina Villarreal had 11 points to go along with six steals, and Stehling added eight points. Boyd had nine rebounds and 11 defensive deflections, while Krueger had 13 deflections.

The Kitty Kats are now 11-5 on the season and 2-0 in District 31-2A. On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, Yorktown will travel to Kenedy to take on the Leopards.
