Every shelter, pet rescue and animal control facility dreads two holidays every year.... the Fourth of July and New Year's Eve!
There are fireworks, noise makers and lots of extra 'sounds' that our pets - dogs and cats - are not familiar with and puts them in a state of panic. The only safe place for a dearly beloved pet is INDOORS or in a small room with a radio playing to distract them.
Too many people assume that their pet will not be affected, but they are the first ones calling animal control or a shelter in search of their missing pet the next morning. Just because there is a dog house, a tall fence or other options to keep your pet in your yard - when pets hear a loud 'BOOM' they have super powers and will find a way to escape.
It is also dangerous to rope or chain up a dog on New Year's Eve - this can create another tragic episode for the poor scared canine. Pets are going to flee in desperation and therefore will not be paying attention to traffic - they could be hit or even cause an accident.
Please pet owners - be prepared prior to December 31. Make advance plans to secure the puppy, dog, kitten or cat in the safest possible enclosed environment and offer toys, food, radio sounds as a distraction through the night. This is especially important for pet adopters who have a newly acquired pet; they are clueless as to what to expect on New Year's Eve. Let's have no surprises for the pets or the pet owners as we look forward to 2025.
