Kitty Kats, Wildcats drop back-to-back district games

Over the holidays, the Yorktown Kitty Kat and Wildcat basketball teams played a couple of District 312A games and were unable to come away with any wins. On Monday, December 30, Yorktown traveled to Refugio to take on the Lady Cats and Wildcats.

Over the holidays, the Yorktown Kitty Kat and Wildcat basketball teams played a couple of District 312A games and were unable to come away with any wins.

On Monday, December 30, Yorktown traveled to Refugio to take on the Lady Cats and Wildcats. In the JV girls game, the Kitty Kats came away with a 35-11 win. The Varsity Girls would struggle early against Refugio, who led 27-1ure6 at halftime. In the third quarter, Refugio increased its lead to 3518. The Kitty Kats defense would kick into high gear, as Yorktown went on a 22-7 run to cut Refugio’s lead to 42-40. However, the Lady Cats, led by All-State post Brady Fox-Smith, would close out the game by outsourcing Yorktown, 8-4, for the 50-44 win. The Kitty Kats were led by senior Laynie Boyd with 15 points and nine rebounds and freshman Palyn Koopman with 12 points and nine rebounds. Senior Nina Villarreal and sophomore Kendall Sievers had six points each, while senior Sydnie Krueger pulled down 11 rebounds. In the Varsity Boys game, the Wildcats would fall to Refugio, 61-33.

On Friday, January 3, 2025, Yorktown hosted Port Aransas Lady Marlins and Marlins. In the JV Girls game, the Kitty Kats lost an exciting overtime game. The JV Wildcats were also unable to notch a win. In the Varsity Girls, both teams battle back and forth. Port Aransas took a 10-6 first quarter lead and led 20-19 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Kitty Kats would outscore the Lady Marlins, 11-9, to take the lead, 30-29. In the fourth quarter, Port Aransas outscored Yorktown, 12-4, to take the 4134 win. Koopmann led the Kitty Kats with 15 points, while Krueger had eight points and 10 rebounds. Villarreal added seven points and had five steals. In the Varsity Boys game, Port Aransas, ranked #22 in the TABC Class 2A state poll, defeated Yorktown, 80-18.
