Seeing Double-Double: Lady Gobblers dominate in district matches

It was a big night for the Cuero Lady Gobblers and an even bigger night for Arissa Carbonara and Aubrey Bowles, who both had a double-double, as the Lady Gobblers handed the Lady Apaches their 15th loss of the season with a score of 60-35 on Tuesday, January 7.

The Lady Gobblers continue to dominate the district moving to 3-0 after wins over Gonzales on Tuesday, and S.A. Memorial on Friday. Joining the outstanding performances of Carbonara (23 pts, 17 rebounds) and Bowles (13 points, 10 rebounds) was Mauriyana Dasilva who capitalized on 6 steals, finishing the night with 6 points. Dasilva is on fire right now, posting two or more steals per game.

The Lady Gobbler defense has been impressive this season allowing an average of 29 points per game. The defense started off strong on the season, and carried that throughout Friday’s match up against S.A. Memorial. Memorial, coming off a five-game losing streak was hopeful to pick up their first district win, but the visiting Lady Gobblers were just too much for them.

Coach Amy Crain noted, “We are 23-6 and 3-0 in District. I am really proud of this group and their passion for the game and each other. They really enjoy playing together and spending time together, and it shows in their performance. We are just trying to get better every game and every practice. They have a ‘can’t wait to get back on the court’ attitude and work ethic and high expectations.”

Highlighting the Memorial match up was another domination by the Lady Gobblers. With the final score being 70-5, it was a complete team effort by the nine members of the team with everyone playing a part in scoring or defense. Carbonara led the team with 18 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 steals for an unusual triple-triple. Bowles followed with 17 points, Senior Kyara Denson with 12, and Dasilva chipped in 8.

“It’s always fun when everyone on the team gets to play in a victory over a District opponent, that was the case tonight,” Carbonara said.

Adding to the 70, were Senior Kaitlyn Comiskey (3), Sophomore Averie Orozco (2), Senior Jaydie Cooper (4), Sophomore Laelah Mendiola (2), and Sariyah Williams (5.)

In addition to the dominating win at Memorial, Carbonara and Bowles hit huge milestones in their careers. Bowles exceeded 1,000 rebounds in her career, and Carbonara hit over 1,500 career points, and surpassed 1,000 career rebounds. The Cuero Athletics Facebook posted, “We are proud of these young ladies and are so lucky to have them as a part of the Lady Gobbler athletic program.”

The Lady Gobblers will take on LaVernia at home on Tuesday, January 14, for a very exciting match up. The Lady Bears are sitting at 2-0 in district to the Lady Gobblers 3-0. It is definitely a must see match up, so make plans to pack the Roost. Tip off is scheduled for 6:30.
