Hello Cuero, It's Sunday, January 19, 4:51 p.m., and I just got off a Zoom call with city, county, first responders and school district officials. The topic of discussion was the impending winter weather. It's coming and we are preparing for any emergencies which may occur. I am so proud of all our leadership who come together during the year and especially during times of crisis.
Saturday morning, January 18, I provided welcoming remarks at opening ceremonies for the Lil Dribblers youth basketball 2025 season. I was so overwhelmed with the number of teams and kids present; they are Cuero’s future. When I asked the kids who wanted to be Mayor of Cuero one day, over half the kids raised their hands. Awesome!!
On January 14, I addressed the participants of the 3rd Citizens Police Academy. Although I was disappointed with the low turnout, there is still time to sign up and participate. On Tuesday, February 11, from 6-9 p.m., I will be presenting a situational awareness program for the class, at the rock house in the park, which will also be open to the public. I will be covering red flags (warning signs) to look for in different types of scenarios, as well as drug and human trafficking and methods to protect yourself, your family and your home. Please drop by; you don’t have to stay the entire time.
On January 9, I attended the retirement ceremony for Lt. John Solis, Cuero Fire Department. I thanked him and his wife Margaret for their service and commitment to the City of Cuero. The film crew from the Discovery Channel wrapped up filming in Cuero on January 10th, I will let everyone know when the Expedition X episode will air, featuring our fair city. The film crew was very impressed with Cuero.
On January 13th, the Cuero City Council approved the NEW Golf cart ordinance for the City of Cuero. You can read it on the City of Cuero website. I read a proclamation designating Feb 3-7 2025, as News Literacy Week, as well as recognizing Ken Towery as a Pulitzer Prize winner, while working at the Cuero Record, on a story he broke concerning the Texas Veterans Land office corrupt practices in the 1950’s. I highly recommend his book, written in 1995 titled “The Chow Dipper.” The early history of Cuero and the Cuero Daily Record is mentioned in the book. On 17 January, I was the keynote speaker at a Windham School District graduation ceremony at the Stevenson Unit, 19 Offenders obtained GED diplomas or plumbing trades certificates. Please be careful with space heaters and carbon monoxide levels during cold weather. The Fire department has already responded to a space heater fire recently.
Stay warm, more to follow.
