The Yorktown Kitty Kats and Wildcats Varsity Basketball teams hosted Woodsboro on January 14, 2025, in District 31-2A action and delivered decisive victories to extend their district winning streaks to three games. The Kitty Kats powered their way to a 54-32 win, while the Wildcats secured a 4838 victory, sending the visitors home empty- handed.
In the Varsity girls’ matchup, senior Sydnie Krueger opened the scoring for Yorktown, but Woodsboro quickly answered to tie the game at 2-2. That was as close as the Eagles would get, as the Kitty Kats erupted on a 10-0 run, fueled by senior Laynie Boyd’s three free throws, freshman Palyn Koopmann’s five quick points, and a fast-break layup from senior Nina Villarreal. Yorktown closed the first quarter with a commanding 14-6 lead.
The Kitty Kats continued their dominance in the second quarter, building their advantage to 24-8 before heading into halftime with a 29-18 lead. Sophomore Gracie Stehling and Boyd added four points apiece during the period, keeping Woodsboro at bay.
In the third quarter, Stehling took over the offensive glass, scoring six points and further extending Yorktown’s lead to 44-23. The Kitty Kats outscored Woodsboro 10-9 in the final quarter to seal the victory.
Stehling’s first ever double-double performance, with 12 points and 10 rebounds, showcased her dominance in the paint. Koopmann chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while Boyd contributed 11 points and five boards. Krueger added nine points and pulled down 11 rebounds, anchoring Yorktown’s defense. Villarreal added six points and four steals, while sophomore Kendall Sievers collected eight rebounds to round out the effort.
In JV action, the JV Boys picked up a 53-25 win.
In the Varsity boys’ game, junior Brody Metting set the tone early, draining a three-pointer and sparking the Wildcats’ opening run. Freshman Aaron Luke followed with a layup to make it 5-0 before Woodsboro managed to respond. The Eagles clawed back to narrow the gap to 7-4 by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Yorktown extended its lead with quick baskets from Metting, sophomore Brayden Knostman, and senior Ethan Fitts, building a 13-4 advantage. However, Woodsboro rallied to outscore the Wildcats 11-9 in the frame, cutting Yorktown’s lead to a slim 16-15 margin at halftime.
The Wildcats reclaimed control in the third quarter, fueled by the efforts of Metting and junior Ryan Knostman, who combined for eight of Yorktown’s 16 points. Their aggressive play gave the Wildcats a 32-21 lead heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter turned into a high-scoring affair, as Woodsboro poured in 17 points in a last-ditch effort to close the gap. Yorktown, however, answered with 16 points of their own, with R. Knostman dominating in the paint for eight of those. The Wildcats held firm to secure the 48-38 win.
R. Knostman led the charge with a double- double, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds. Metting added nine points, while Fitts contributed eight points and controlled the boards with 12 rebounds. B. Knostman chipped in seven points and made his presence felt on defense with six steals.
The Kitty Kats improved to 17-9 on the season, and 6-2 in District 31-2A. The Wildcats improved to 6-8 on the season and 3-3 in District 31-2A.
