School Board sets transfer agreement, parents urged to check dress code

Cuero ISD school board members approved the new transfer agreement, which is a memorandum of understanding (MOU), at the regular meeting on July 18. The new agreement does not affect fall enrollment, but it will impact the spring enrollment, according to Dr. Micah Dyer, CISD superintendent.

The DeWitt County school districts of Meyersville and Westhoff as well as Nursery ISD traditionally had an agreement that accepted their students for high school. The newly adopted MOU means students from those districts will no longer be universally accepted.

However, Board President Mary Sheppard said only issues with attendance or behavior would call into question the acceptance. Dyer said classroom availability would also determine transfer acceptances.

Also, since Nursery contracts with Cuero for transportation and since they have indicated they will not sign the agreement, Dyer said a new transportation agreement will need to be approved.

Other items on the agenda included the introduction of Stephanie Egg as the new principal of French Elementary, approval of the updated student handbook and suicide prevention program.

Egg said she has been working with the faculty on leadership and teamwork as well as scheduling. She also announced that art and music classes will be included this year.

On the student handbook, the principals commented that the junior high dress code differs from the elementary dress code. Parents need to check the junior high dress code closely before purchasing school clothes. Things such as thin material on shorts can be prohibited.

Dyer said the student handbook is available online and is a work in progress with items being added as needed. He said print copies are also available through the school district.

District Nurse Wanda Hayes described the updated Suicide Prevention Plan that has required follow up of counseling for the student. She said if parents refuse the counseling, they must acknowledge it with their signature. Dyer added that the document also clearly states that Child Protective Services will be informed.

After adjourning the regular meeting, the board had a working dinner and teamwork training session.
