On a cool Wednesday evening last week, Cuero fans made their way to LaVernia for an exciting showdown in District 284A. The Gobbler basketball team went head-tohead against the Bears, both teams entering the contest undefeated in district and full of adrenaline to come out on top. However, when the final buzzer sounded, it was the Bears that got the win, handing the Gobblers their first district loss of the season with a final score of 69-56.
The game got off to a fast start, with LaVernia taking the lead with 26 points to the Gobblers 14. Cuero’s offense struggled at times, but adjustments were made and the second quarter showed evidence that the Gobblers had the skill to keep pace with their well-rounded opponents. Despite the rocky start, Cuero fought back in the second quarter, matching up with La-Vernia and tying up the score 32-32 at the half. Junior David Lienen was a standout for Cuero in this district match up, scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while contributing 2 assists and 1 steal.
As the third quarter unfolded, LaVernia regained control of the game. By the end of the quarter, they had extended their lead to 57-46. Opportunities presented themselves throughout the contest, but Cuero struggled to take advantage. In addition to Lienen, Junior Walker Dietze made his presence felt with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals. His defensive efforts stood out, as well as his ability to disrupt LaVernia's play. Senior Tony Perez also contributed with 8 points, alongside 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Sophomore Chris Mathis provided support on the boards, pulling down 8 rebounds along with 6 points. Junior Conner Molina added 9 points to the scoreboard and contributed with 3 rebounds, indicating a well-rounded team effort despite the loss.
While the Gobblers faced disappointment after the game, the loss may serve as drive to finish out district on top. With such talent on the roster and four district games remaining, Gobbler fans can expect this team to regroup and come back stronger, fueled by the need to reclaim the top spot in District 28-4A.
The Gobblers were off last Friday for their bye week, but head into the second round of district taking on San Antonio Kennedy Tuesday night in San Antonio, and will be back at home on Friday, January 31 for a match up with Gonzales. Tip off for both games will be at 6:15.
