The older I get the more I realize the memories of days gone by. They are treasures and something that I will take with me until the Lord calls me home. These cherished thoughts linger in mymindmostdaysandIam sure that others of the same ageIamandolder, remember thesetimesofthepastalso.
I remember as a child one of the songs we sung in church was an all-time favorite called “Precious Memories”. As I researched this song, I found it to be credited to the J.B.F. Wright as the author-composer in 1925. Unlike most modern-day writers and composers, Wright never taught, nor did he claim a great amount of music education. He wrote from inspiration, and in his own words, “…when words came spontaneously, flowing into place when I feel the divine urge.” “Precious Memories” has been recorded by many artists. Some shorten the verses or may even change the words, but the meaning is still the same.
Evidently Wright was like many of us are today. His memories of the past were good ones and his family was a treasured item that remained with himuntilheleftthisworld. Read the lyrics and see if they fit your past also:
“Precious mem’ries, unseen angels, sent from somewhere to my soul, How they linger, ever near me, and the sacred past unfold.
Chorus:
Precious mem’ries, how they linger, how they ever flood my soul, In the stillness of the midnight, precious, sacred scenes unfold.
Precious father, loving mother, fly across the lonely years,
And old home scenes of my childhood, in fond memory appear.
Chorus:
In the stillness of the midnight, echoes from the past I hear, Old-time singing, gladness bringing, from that lovely land somewhere.
Chorus:
I remember mother praying, father, too, on bended knee, Sun is sinking, shadows falling, but their pray’rs still follow me.
Chorus:
As I travel on life’s pathway, know not what the years may hold, As I ponder, hope grows fonder, precious mem’ries flood my soul.”
No one knows what tomorrow may bring. I once read a quote that went like this; “How you spend your time is more important than how you spend your money.” For those of us that are getting older appreciate these words more so than the younger generation does. Yes, making a living is important and all of us should strive to do the best we can, but do not waste your time on foolish ideas or methods of the world. Cherish your time with family and friends.
If we will study God’s Word, we will find that we are to use our time wisely because the world will lead you astray. No one should look back on their life with regret but should hold on to the fond memories we have from days gone by.
We need to remember what we are told in 1 John 2:17; “And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”
Do you know Jesus personally? Haveyouaccepted Hisfreegiftofsalvation? If not, ask Him to come into your heart today and walk with you daily to guide your steps. Your memories will become much sweeter whenyouknowwhereyour eternal home will be.
Prayer: Thank you Jesus for your saving grace. Thank you for saving me as a young child and allowing me to have a good life with many pleasant memories. Amen
