WACO - The Cuero High School football program was named as a runner up to the Grant Teaff Beyond the Game Team Award on January 28, receiving a $1,000 grant for service to their community. This award is presented to one Texas High School team who exemplifies outstanding service to their community that goes beyond the game. The Freeman High School softball team in Katy was selected as the recipient of the 2025 Grant Teaff Beyond the Game Team Award.

“High School coaches have an incredible platform to impact the lives of their athletes by instilling a culture of servant leadership,” College Football Hall of Fame coach Grant Teaf said. “I congratulate Coach Jill Voss and her softball team for the incredible acts of service in their community.”

Coach Voss uses her position as a coach and the game of softball as a platform to show athletes how to go beyond their God-given abilities and demonstrate their efforts off the ballfield by serving others. In order to receive their uniform, players must complete 30 hours of community service.

Some of the service projects included running Field Day, working school tournaments, volunteering at the animal shelter, packing Thanksgiving to-go boxes for the homeless, adopting a child for Christmas (through Katy Christian Ministries Santa’s Sleigh) and much more.

Representatives from the Freeman High School softball team will be honored for their commitment to service at the 2025 Texas Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on February 15th. The team will also receive a $5,000 grant from the Grant Teaff Foundation and yearround recognition on the new Grant Teaff Beyond the Game video display in the Hall of Fame.

The Grant Teaff Foundation will also present four schools that voters scored in the top five $1,000 grants for their efforts in making a difference in their communities. The four schools include (in alphabetical order), Cuero High School football, Flour Bluff High School’s All Sports Leadership Team, Midland High School football, and Snyder High School Football.

The Teaff family and Grant Teaff Foundation thanked the 46 Texas high schools that were nominated for their outstanding community service projects. The award is supported by the Texas High School Coaches Association, Dave Campbell Texas Football, and the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association.
