Hello my fellow Cueroites, Mr. Danny Rocha Jr. was given a retirement ceremony and a watch for his faithful service to the citizens of Cuero on January 23rd. Although a joyous occasion for the retiree, unfortunately the city loses experienced and highly skilled individuals. Mr. Rocha was a heavy equipment operator (backhoe), which takes years to master.
The City of Cuero was granted a $ 10,000 grant for the purchase and installment of three more license plate readers on major highways with access to the Cuero city limits. This equipment aids the Cuero Police department in monitoring vehicles coming into or leaving the city limits. If the license plate is in the readers database as stolen, amber/silver alert etc., the officers get alerted in real time.
January 28th saw the first meeting of the Mayors Youth Council in 2025. I am so proud of the Youth Council. We discussed upcoming community volunteer opportunities and Council shirts were distributed and a group photo taken. On January 29th, I spoke at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon on the 'State of Cuero.”’ I highlighted major city events in 2024 and upcoming events for 2025. Wayne Berger, Cuero City Manager, highlighted major past, ongoing and projected city projects.
On 30 January, I spoke to the St. Michael’s Catholic School student body during Catholic Schools week in the morning and attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Rise Broadband, which is ready and accepting orders for fiber optic internet connections. City Manager Berger and I treated the Cuero Police department to pizza and soft drinks during a recent training session to show our appreciation for the dangerous job they do. On February 4, the City Council attended training on hotel sales tax given by experts on the topic. I also met with a field representative from Senator John Cornyn’s office.
Tuesday February 11th, a Cuero delegation will be traveling to the State Capitol in Austin as guests of Senator Lois Kolkhorst and Representative AJ Louderback. I look forward to the visit. There is a Blood drive scheduled by the City of Cuero on February 18th in Council Chambers. Please drop by and donate if able: one donation helps four individuals. As part of my civic duty, I started donating blood in high school (1977) and have continued the tradition by donating, on and off, 13 gallons over a 48-year period. The 1st Lady and I attended the Boys and Girls club Gospel Brunch on Sunday morning. What a worthy cause! Shout out to all the Board members and volunteers who do an amazing job with Cuero’s kids. Have an awesome week!!! More to follow.
