AUSTIN— On February 7, Texas Land Commissioner and Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham, M.D., presented the Richard A. Anderson Texas State Veterans Home in Houston with a certificate commemorating its Five-Year Anniversary. Commissioner Buckingham was joined by other state leaders, including State Senator Kelly Hancock and State Representative Alma Allen.
'As Chairwoman of the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB), it is my responsibility and honor to ensure Texas Veterans are cared for and receive the best benefits in the country,' said Commissioner Buckingham. 'The VLB's 10 Veterans homes are integral to the support we provide to Veterans and their families, and the Richard A. Anderson Texas State Veterans Home is vital to the Houston community. '
The celebration at the Richard A. Anderson Texas Veterans Home (TSVH) commemorated five years of excellence in Veteran care and recognized the Houston TSVH's staff for their devotion to Texas Veterans.
The Richard A. Anderson TSVH was dedicated on February 7, 2020 and has 120 comfortable private rooms. In this facility, 30 of these rooms are dedicated to state-of-the-art Memory Support. The building is over 100,000 square feet and offers residents various daily activities, which include off-site options for Veterans to interact with their communities.
The Veterans home also offers different types of therapy programs like traditional physical and speech therapy along with alternative options such as music, art, and pet therapies. The Houston TSVH is open to eligible Veterans, spouses, and Gold Star Parents. Eligible Veterans with a 70% or higher service- connected disability may live at the home for free.
The TSVH in Houston is named after Richard A. Anderson, a U.S. Marine who served from April 8, 1968 to August 24, 1969. Anderson gave his life for his country. He saved his partner's life by rolling onto a grenade during battle after already being wounded. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on August 24, 1969 for his courage and selfless devotion.
