Lady Gobblers Head into Season Opener

The Lady Gobbler Softball team has finished up their scrimmages and are ready to battle it out this season. The Lady Gobblers kick off their season on Tuesday, February 11 at home versus Ganado. Coach Cody Miller commented “Our scrimmages have been productive. After graduating five seniors last year, it has allowed us to work with kids at positions that need to be filled. We are young, but we are really excited the direction our team is going.” Head out to support the Lady Gobblers at 5 and 7.

CHS Tennis Shines at Yoakum Tournament: A Promising Season Ahead 

On Wednesday and Thursday Feb. 5 and 6, the tennis courts at Yoakum were humming with anticipation as the CHS tennis team took part in the Yoakum Tennis Tournament that showcased the talents of the Gobbler and Lady Gobbler players. With a worthy overall performance, the team not only demonstrated their abilities on the court., but gave fans a taste of what is to come this season.

Leading the way for the varsity girls was Mia Salazar, who earned her a silver medal in the competitive Varsity Singles Division. With an impressive record of 3 wins and 1 loss during the tournament, Salazar showed promise as a strong contender in her division. On the boys' side, Dreyson Knebel and Spencer Pierce were notable standouts as well, both finishing their tournament matches with a record of 2-1 in Varsity Boys Division. Both Knebel and Pierce stayed composed under pressure securing their victories.

In the Junior Varsity Doubles Division, the duo of William Weissmiller and Jason Wolter made quite an impact by battling it out to a bronze medal. Their teamwork on the court was evident, as they finished the day at 3 wins 1 loss.

The Junior Varsity Girls also had a notable performance, with SK Root finishing with a balanced 2-2 record in the Singles Division. Additionally, Logan Garcia competed in JV boys singles with a 1-1 record and the duo of Emma Helfer and Cadence Kourtney showed promise in JV Girls Doubles Division, ending their tournament with a 1-1 record as well.

According to Coach Edgar Vander Stucken, with the team's overall season record at 14 wins and 8 losses, the CHS tennis program boasts a remarkable winning percentage of .636. “For our first action of the 2025 season, our players saw some success. We will take what we learned this week and apply it in practices this week.” The team continues to improve as they compete in each tournament. “Medalists Salazar, Weissmiller, and Wolter will only get better as the season progresses. The next two weeks we will focus on improving our first serves, being consistent in our serve return, and attacking opponent’s backhands as much as we can.”

The performances at the Yoakum Tournament are just the beginning, and fans can expect great competition as the CHS tennis squad continues to develop its players and strive for championships.

Stockdale Powerlifting Meet: A Showcase of Talent and Improvement by Cuero Athletes 

On Thursday, February 7, Stockdale High School hosted a powerlifting meet that brought together 9 schools. With a packed gym filled with fans from the 9 districts, the event provided an excellent opportunity fortheCueroathletestotest theirprogressinthesport.

The meet showcased impressive performances from both boys and girls, with several lifters achieving personal bests and some even making it to the awards stand. Among the standout athletes was Connor Thigpen, who not only secured firstplaceinthe181-weight class, but also recorded an impressivetotalliftof1,210 pounds, marking an increase of 115 pounds from his performance at the Gonzales Meet.

For the Lady Gobblers, Shania Burden showcased her strength in the 105-weight class, claiming second place with a total lift of 560 lbs. Jaide Jones also made her mark in the 132-weight class by lifting a total 645 pounds, giving her a second-place finish. JoiningJoneswasAvalynn Rodriguez (625 total) and Sarah Pedraza (670 total) both bringing home a silver in their weight classes.

The Gobbler and Lady Gobbler athletes cheered for and supported each other, celebrating achievements regardless of place. The Stockdale Meet assigned all of the Cuero athletes to compete at the same station, allowing teammatestoprovidemoral support to one another.

While not every athlete medaled, the real victory lay in their progress and their spirit in the competition. The Gobbler and Lady Gobbler Powerlifting Teams will head to Victoria East on Saturday, Feb. 15 beginning at 9:00 am.
