At the “Keep Yorktown Beautiful” (KYB) meeting on February 4 at the First Presbyterian Church, Secretary Patti Harbers announced that a total of 13 park benches had been successfully installed. The seven members present nodded in approval and relief as Harbers shared the recent history of these benches.

The benches in Yorktown City Park had become old and dilapidated when Mayor Baker approached KYB with a suggestion.

“Last year, Mayor Baker came to us about adding more benches to the park. We thought it would be a great idea to offer memorial benches, allowing people to honor their loved ones,” Harbers said.

KYB published an article in the April 24, 2024, edition of the Yorktown News-View to promote this initiative. The benches, made from recycled plastic by Barco Products, come in lengths of 4, 5, or 6 feet and can be personalized in memory of a loved one or with the name of an organization.

“They are expensive, and shipping costs are high,” Harbers remarked. “However, they come with a 50year guarantee,” she added.

“The community has been very excited about this project. We received responses from 13 individuals and families,” Harbers continued.

The benches are ordered in sets of six to qualify for a discount, but unfortunately, the 13th bench had to be purchased at the regular price.

“It’s truly been a blessing, and the benches have really enhanced the park,” Harbers stated.

There has been some vandalism, though. “We had one incident in the park shortly after the benches were installed. Someone vandalized them with graffiti and cut one of the canopies. Fortunately, the City had insurance, so they replaced it,” she said.

KYB also discussed the situation about the crepe myrtles on Main Street at the future location of the city of Yorktown Marquee, replacing the mulch in the park, and cutter ants and roses at the RV Park.

President Donna Roeder related that she observed the joyful laughter of children playing in the City Park. It was a heartwarming sight, and all the members felt a deep sense of satisfaction knowing that their efforts were truly valued.

Keep Yorktown Beautiful holds regular meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. The meetings take place at the First Presbyterian Church. For more information, please contact Secretary Patti Harbers at 361935-5756 or President Donna Roeder at 361649-6594.
