Man in critical condition after shooting

The normal quiet of a Friday morning in Cuero was wildly interrupted by the sounds of gunshots and sirens last week.
Nineteen-year-old Brandon Perez was shot twice in the face at about 10:30 a.m. while walking along the street in the 600 block of Aransas Pass in the west side of town.
Police said Perez was walking when a blue four-door Chevrolet stopped. Two occupants in the car began arguing with Perez and a fight began. A gun was produced and Perez was shot twice. One of the bullets lodged in his neck.
It was later determined the occupants of the vehicle were Wesley James Whiten and Ronell Green, both 19, of Cuero.
There were at least four witnesses to the shooting. It was a female resident near the scene that made the 911 call for help. She also rendered aid to Perez until first responders arrived.
Perez was taken to Citizens Medical Center in Victoria and life-flighted to San Antonio Military Medical Center at about 1 p.m. He was shot once on the right side of the face below his eye with the bullet exiting the side of his head and once on the left side with the bullet lodging in his neck. As of Monday Perez was in critical but stable condition
Green and Whiten sped off apparently in the direction of the hospital. Green was treated in the emergency room for a stab wound in the back and released. Just a few blocks from the hospital, the police spotted the vehicle and stopped the two suspects.
Police Chief Jay Lewis said there were two pistols and two knives recovered at the scene of the shooting. One knife belonged to Perez. The other knife had blood on it and apparently belonged to the suspects.
The other weapons recovered included a .45 mm and a 9 mm semi-automatic pistols. It was determined the 9 mm was used to shoot Perez.
The two men were charged with aggravated assault and are being held in DeWitt County Jail on $100,000 bond each.
Chief Lewis said it was hard to categorize the crime whether it was drug or gang related or personal dispute.
He said there is some indication the incident was related to recent drive-by shootings in the west side area.
