Amber Alert returns baby

An Amber Alert issued by Cuero Police paid off for a family here on July 4. It also resulted in charges of kidnapping on a Victoria woman.
According to Capt. Steven Ellis, the incident began at 9 a.m. last Thursday when Jessica Barraza, 35, of Victoria entered a residence in the 400 block of King Street in Cuero and took an eight-month-old child from its play pen.
The child’s siblings contacted family members to report the incident and police were notified. An Amber Alert was issued almost immediately giving details of the child and vehicle.
A short time later, a truck driver, stopped on the side Hwy. 181 near Pettus, notified law enforcement he had located the car and baby.
The trucker had seen the Amber Alert while attempting to repair his truck on the side of the road. He told officers Barraza had stopped next to his truck and told him she had kidnapped the baby and knew the officers were looking for her.
Another trucker at the scene took Barraza’s car keys to prevent her from leaving.
Department of Public Safety troopers arrived and assisted with the arrest of Barraza. She was charged with burglary of a habitation and kidnapping. Officers from Cuero Police Department transferred her to DeWitt County Jail. Bonds have been set at $70,000.
The baby was returned to its family unharmed.
