Lady Gobblers clinch playoffs

Nothing could be better than for the Lady Gobblers to win during parents night and to be able to clinch playoffs. It happened tonight after defeating the Gonzales Lady Apaches in three games.
Cuero coach Rebecca Riojas-Fryer said, “We knew that going into this game, if we won tonight, we clinched it and that is how they played. They wanted it so bad that they did not want to wait until Friday to see what is going to happen.”
The lady Gobblers had a slow start in the first game. While behind 0-3 Martina Stavinoha put one down the pipes to get things started. When Cuero was ahead 20-8, the Apaches found a few weak areas and started to close the gap. With the score 21-17 coach Riojas-Fryer changed things up with the players for their first win 25-20.
All was in sync during the second game. Emmarie Johnson and Missy Odom were making kills shots from the net that led to the win 25-9.
In game three the Apaches played good defense at the net blocking Johnson’s shots but that did not deter her from being more intentional. Kaeleen Sievers and Johnson traded off to make some heavy scores. Mia Knetig also had the sweet spot while serving making many aces. The Lady Gobblers won 25-13.
While the Lady Gobblers have their chance to compete in the playoffs their seed is uncertain at this time.
Riojas-Fryer said, “If Yoakum lost tonight we will be tied for second with Yoakum. If Yoakum upsets La Grange we will finish third. Friday will be a big game for everybody.”
“We have finally have gone over the hump of tieing for third or placing fourth. They did it.”
Cuero will play Smithville at home on Friday, Oct. 25.
