“God Jul!” Merry Christmas from the DeWitt County Historical Museum.
Texas traditions come from many of the world’s cultures. One of these is the Swedish culture, which, according to the Texas Handbook online, began when Swante M.
Swenson came to Texas in 1836. He prospered and was encouraged by Sam Houston to bring other Swedes to this great land. They began coming in 1848 and by 1880, there were 364 Swedes in Texas. Most were farmers and ranchers. Their influence is reflected in such place names as Govalle, Lund, Manda, Hutto, Swensondale, and Bergstrom Air Force Base. By 2000, 160,000 Texans claimed Swedish ancestry. Along with these people came their Christmas celebration, which in the Swedish custom, begins with Santa Lucia Day on December 13.
