Forgery suspects identified, arrested and charged


According to a recent press release, two suspects were identified, arrested and charged with four counts of forgery.
The Dewitt County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating a series of mail thefts from rural mail boxes that have led to citizens personal banking information being stolen. Once this information was stolen, forged checks were made and then used at businesses in surrounding counties.  
Investigators, led by sergeant Carl Bowen, received pictures from video footage at one of the businesses where a forged check was used. This information was given to local crime stoppers and the news media. Once this information was disseminated, the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office started to received tips.
These tips led to the identification of two suspects, Lupe Ann Arriaga and Alonzo Abel Covarrubias, both of Edna. 
These suspects were arrested at a home in Edna by DeWitt County Deputies with the help of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at about 4 p.m. on March 19. The suspects were transported to Jackson County jail and then transported to the DeWitt County jail where they are now being held.
Both suspects are charged with four counts of forgery of a financial instrument, bond set 100,000.00 (one hundred thousand) each charge.
