City asks voters to reinstate half percent sales tax

It was business as usual when Mayor Rene Hernandez called the regular Yorktown City Council meeting to order on Mon., March 24 in the original and newly renovated council chambers at the corner of Main and Riedel Streets.  Approximately 20 guests gathered for the two-hour meeting which visited a variety of agenda items.
Council members Ruben “BB” Garcia, Jerry Alvarez, Larry Mueller and Councilwoman Shawna Lamprecht were present for the meeting, as was City Secretary Robert Mendez.  Councilwoman Frances Villa was absent.
Council voted to call for a city election on May 10 for the purpose of electing three city council members and Proposition I, which is to reinstate the half-percent sales tax for the purpose of providing revenue for the maintainence and/or repair of the City streets.  Three seats are up for re-election and only two filed.  Incumbents Garcia and Mueller have filed while Villa is not seeking re-election, thus leaving one seat vacant. After the election, the council has the authority to appoint someone to fill the vacancy.  Early voting begins on April 28 and ends on May 6.
