Trustees motion to limit lunch charges

Cuero School District trustees spent a good portion of last week’s board meeting talking about students not paying for lunches.
There were also discussions on student surveys, handbooks and stadium lights.
Trustees were asked to consider whether students should be required to pay for meals if they do not qualify for the free or reduced lunches.
Currently, if a student does not have the money to pay for a lunch they are given an alternative meal (sandwich and drink). However, there is a question of how many alternative meals should the student receive.
The issue does not pertain to students that qualify for free lunches because of family income.
According to Aramark Foodservice Director Sandra Hernandez, the district saw about $3,500 worth of meals charged but not paid in the the last school year. About $1,900 of that amount was at Hunt Elementary and just over $600 at John C. French Elementary. Cuero Intermediate had close to $500 worth.
