Boys & Girls Club opens doors to 35 children

Amid rising South Texas temperatures, nestled in a building near the park, the first wave of participants in the Boys & Girls of DeWitt County scatter around a large, open room. The organization first opened its doors June 16.
“We have about 35 kids in the younger age group,” said summer director Shannon Haun. “We can hold 50 kids so hopefully we’ll be opening the wait list soon.”
Haun said that while there are many participants in the younger age group, the organization hopes to recruit more teenagers.
Activities include a variety of arts and crafts.
“This the kid’s club,” Haun said. “They have a lot of say in what we’re going to put in the club as far as decoration. We want their artwork to be featured prominently in the building. We’re working on that.”
