Law enforcement officers were continuing their search Monday for a man suspected of attempting to kidnap a woman in Cuero Sunday night.
According to Police Chief Jay Lewis, the incident occurred around midnight Sunday in the 200 block of East Morgan. Three women and a man were in the house when an unidentified Hispanic male forced his way into the home from a back door.
Two of the women were watching television in a living room and the male occupant was asleep on a sofa. The third female was in a bedroom asleep.
The intruder was attempting to force one of the women watching TV to leave with him. As the residents of the house fought with the intruder, the third female in the bedroom grabbed a shotgun and fired it once to stop the fight.
The intruder then ran from the house and the female with the shotgun chased him outside shooting a second time. The suspect was able to turn the corner at the rear of the house and escape.
Officers described the intruder as about 5’ 10” tall and heavy built. He was wearing a red shirt and blue jeans.
Cuero police were joined by DPS Troopers and DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office deputies in the neighborhood search. Later tracking dogs from TDCJ Cuero’s Stevenson and Beeville units assisted with the search for some distance beyond the residence. The dogs were successful in picking up the scent but eventually lost the track indicating the suspect probably left the area in a vehicle.
Cuero residents are encouraged to use caution during the night hours and report any persons considered to be suspicious by calling law enforcement at 361-275-5734.
