Afflerbach notes increase of trash following holiday

What spans 50 yards wide and 150 yards deep?

It was the trash over the Fourth of July weekend at the river bottom under the bridge of State Highway 72. Trash from spent fire works and beer cans was everywhere.
Curtis Afflerbach, DeWitt County Commissioner of Precinct 1 said, “Every Fourth of July and New Years Eve they leave this kind of mess and this time it is the worst I have seen. It is not just my precinct. It is everywhere.”
Afflerbach estimated that it takes nearly five hours and three men to clean up one site. He said, “With benefits each man is worth $21 per hour. At a half day times three we are spending taxpayer money that could be used for something else.”
It was estimated that the county spends at least $315 in man hours to clean up one site.
