Bobby McMahan

Bobby Jeff McMahan, 82, passed away Aug. 2, 2016 at his home after a brave, hard fought battle with cancer. Bobby was born Jan. 5, 1934 to Charlie and Alice McMahan in the small community of Chicolete in DeWitt County.

For those of you reading this that never had the fortune of meeting this wonderful man, we will try to sum up a man who lived his life to the fullest in these few small paragraphs.

A lifelong resident of Cuero, Bobby spent his life serving others. He began by serving his country in the U.S. army during the Korean Conflict. He then served the residents of Dewitt County as Sheriff for 16 years, thus making him the longest serving Sheriff in the history of DeWitt County.


Brad Haun

Brad Thomas Haun, 50, of Meyersville passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016. He was born June 5, 1966 in Cuero to Clifford and Bette Jo Haun. Brad was self employed and was a member of the Meyersville Volunteer Fire Department and St. John’s Lutheran Church.

He is survived by parents Clifford and Bettie Jo Haun of Meyersville; daughters, Christine Denise Haun and Lauren Elizabeth Haun of Cuero; sister, Lesley Bruns (David) of Goliad; brother Clay Haun (Michelle) of Meyersville; and nieces.

He is preceded in death by sister, Julie Helen Arndt; and nephew Quinton Wade Haun.

Visitation and services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 4 at noon at Freund Funeral Home with services to begin at 1 p.m., with Pastor John Boor officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.

Pallbearers will be Elwood Rangnow, Scott Pokluda, Kyle Rohan, Kenny Ray Tamm, Kevin Fagg, Vance Egg, Jason “Hubby” Wendel, Finley Blackwell, Jennings Steen and David Bruns.


Corine Froehlich

Corine Faye Haun Froehlich, met her Lord and Savior on July 30, 2016, after a valiant battle with breast cancer. We rejoice in the blessing of her 92 years. Corine was born in Meyersville on Aug. 12, 1923 to the late Adolph Haun and Bertha Ideus Haun.  She married Marvin Albert Froehlich on Jan. 20, 1946.

Corine loved serving her Lord, the Bammel Forest Garden Club, and playing bridge with her friends in Meyersville. She attended Grace Lutheran Church in Victoria and participated in the Lutheran Women’s Mission League. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Houston, the LWML Dorcas Circle, the Sewing Circle and her Traveling Group.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ellis, Johnny and Norvan Haun, her husband, Marvin Froehlich, her son Rodney Froehlich, her daughter Donna Froehlich Randle, and her step-son Albert “Buddy” Froehlich. 


Ella Mitchell

Ella V. Mitchell, 79, of Cuero passed away Saturday, July 23, 2016. She was born March 23, 1937 in Edna Hill to the late Walton and Minnie Neal Locke. Ella retired from Ameripol Synpol after many years of service.

She is survived by her daughters, Karen Robinson of Apache, Oklahoma, Glenda Johnson of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Paula Scott of Cuero; sons, Don Wesley Roberts of San Antonio and Bobby Cox of Cuero; brother, Arvil D. Locke of Odessa; and 14 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Omar Mitchell; parents, Walton and Minnie Locke; nine sisters; and four brothers.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 11 a.m., at Freund Funeral Home with Pastor Grady Arnold officiating.

Dienne Sumbera

Dienne Zelie Landry Sumbera, 77, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016. She was born in Columbia, Louisiana on Dec. 16, 1938 to Luchion and Zelie Thiebaud Landry.

She married Ronald George Sumbera on Oct. 28, 1972 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Cuero.

Survivors include husband of 43 years, Ronald Sumbera; son, George B. Sumbera; daughter, Marie (Brandon) Immenhauser; sister, Jan Thiebaud; brother, L.B. Landry; three grandchildren, Willie, Alec and Hannah Immenhauser; numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents Luchion and Zelie Thiebaud Landry.

A visitation will be held at Rosewood Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, July 26, from 6-7 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 27, at 10 a.m.

Burial will be a private family service at a later date.


Robert Bond

Robert Gordon Bond passed away at home on July 6, 2016, in Austin, at the age of 65.

Gordon is preceded in death by his father, Alan Bond. He’s survived by his mother, Anna Bond; wife of 24 years, Vickie Bond; children Beth Bond, Andy Bond and his wife Samantha, Noel Hooker, Jana Gottschalk and her husband Chris; brother Barry Bond and his wife Steffanie; nephews Austin and Taylor Bond; and grandchildren Jamie and Jake Hooker and Tyler and Addison Gottschalk.

Regina Broll

Regina Kortz Broll, 89, of Yorktown, passed away July 12, 2016. She was born Sept. 27, 1926, in Helena, Texas, to the late Leo and Julia Moy Kortz.

Regina was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank B. Broll; daughter, Mary Jane Broll; and brothers, Conrad, Anton and Johnny Kortz.

She is survived by her children, Fred Broll (Ruby), James Broll (Lynette), Anne Spies (Gordon), and Elaine Alex (David); 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, 11 great-great- grandchildren; brothers, Vincent Kortz (Betty), Aloys Kortz (Norma), and Edward Kortz; sisters, Florence Warzecha, Justine Drapalla and Rosie Craig.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m., Friday, July 15, at Finch Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 16, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Roger Hawes officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.


Alice Fellers

Alice “Jeannie” Fellers, age 71, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on July 10, 2016 at 4:40 p.m. in Austin.

Jeannie was born in Laredo on Sept. 24, 1944 to Luther Lamar and Lili Bessie Riggs Coleman. She married Don Fellers on Dec. 15, 1962. Jeannie loved cooking, camping, traveling, and gardening.

She is survived her loving husband of 53 years, Don Fellers of Cedar Creek; Son, Ronald Fellers and wife Margaret of Austin; Daughters Donna Alford and husband Greg of Cedar Creek and Mary Harmon of Bastrop. Grandchildren: Joshua Fellers, Charlotte Fellers, Ariel Alford, Jake Alford, Chloe Alford, Michael Fellers and Seth Harmon. Sisters Shirley Ann Dunno of Victoria and Margaret Brietkze of Victoria.

Jeannie is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Luther and Leonard Coleman; sisters, Dorothy Coleman, Delcie Bowen and Ruby Harryman. Granddaughter Sarah Fellers.


Albert P. Metting Jr.

Albert P. Metting Jr., 93, of Yorktown passed away Sunday, July 10, 2016. He was born Feb. 1, 1923 in Yorktown to the late Albert P. and Elizabeth Ender Metting Sr. He served in the Army from 1945-1947. He served in World War II. He worked as a mechanic and in the oilfield industry. He loved his dogs Misty, Sweetheart and Star.

Albert is survived by his son Albert W. Metting, grandchildren Nicole and Wesley Metting, granddaughter Alexis Orta, and sister Nelda Warecha.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Gladys Waltersdorff, brothers Fred, Arnold, Otto, Harry, Oswald and Norman Metting and sisters Otila Hanks and Meta John.

Visitation is from 5-7 p.m., Friday July 15 at Massey Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday July 16 at Massey Funeral Home. Interment to follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.
