Hicks-Calloway thanks Westhoff ISD for their Veterans Day program
I am writing to offer a huge thank you to Westhoff ISD Superintendent David Kennedy, his faculty and staff, and to the students for what I consider to have been one of the greatest Veterans Day programs I have ever been to or been a part of. Westhoff ISD is blessed to have Superintendent Kennedy. His leadership, wisdom, and insight benefits everyone he encounters. I was selected to be the guest speaker for the Westhoff ISD’s Veterans Day program for 2020. I talked about my faith, historical facts concerning Veterans Day, and provided a few key highlights from my own 26-year military career as a two-time combat Veteran as a soldier, sergeant and ultimately as an officer. The program also included incredible singing performances by the enthusiastic students and winners of an essay contest read their award-winning essays to the Veterans and other guests who attended the event. We were then treated to a great lunch at wonderfully decorated tables with artwork from the students complete with pecan pie and iced sugar cookies for dessert! Later, Superintendent Kennedy gifted me with a beautifully framed US flag that included a matted certificate of appreciation for speaking at the event. I just cannot stop thinking about how wonderful the entire experience was for me and for all who attended. Even if I had a thousand tongues to say thank you, that would not be enough. So, I will just say thank you as best I can; thank you, Superintendent Kennedy! I will treasure the beautiful gift for a lifetime and will always be incredibly humbled by it. Superintendent Kennedy set the standard and raised the bar so high that few will ever be able to meet it or surpass it for how to conduct a Veterans Day program. May we all learn from Superintendent Kennedy and continue to be as patriotic as possible by always honoring the sacrifices of our Veterans and their families.
