Smooth COVID transition

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank everyone involved with Westhoff I.S.D. including students, teachers, staff, parents, school board members, and community for working together to transition smoothly from the COVID-19 pandemic to the 2020 face to face school year.

The virus that causes COVID-19 can infect people of all ages. That said, research from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC), among others, has found that while children may be infected by COVID-19 and some severe outcomes have been reported in children, relatively few children with COVID-19 are hospitalized or have severe symptoms. For many children, there are distinct benefits to attending school in person, including instructional, social, and safety benefits. For these reasons, the American Academy of Pediatrics has made a statement supporting on-campus instruction for students.

While it is not possible to eliminate all the risks of furthering the spread of COVID-19 the current science suggests there are many steps schools can take to reduce the risk to students, teachers, and staff significantly. Once again, Westhoff I.S.D. Board of Trustees is standing strong and making the hard financial decisions to make our school one of the safest and most secure environments in our area for both students and staff alike. Our School Board contracted with Harvest Innovative Solutions to install the CIMR (Continuous Infections Microbial Reduction) sanitizing technology. CIMR creates a non-aqueous hydrogen peroxide gas, emitted at only .02 parts per million, or 1/50th of the OSHA safe exposure level. Studies by Auburn University and the US Air Force show CIMR to be effective against airborne and surface contaminations such as influenza, H5N5, MRSA and many other biological threats. Unlike dangerous vapor hydrogen peroxide, CIMR is perfectly safe for humans and will continuously fill and disinfect the areas where it has been deployed. CIMR has been installed in the HVAC system of Westhoff School. In conjunction with the 3000 x G3 UV Ionic Air purifier in every classroom, walkthrough infrared body temperature, all of the standard COVID-19 precautions along with our rigorous deep cleaning standards and disinfecting by Germ Blast five times a year. We are creating the most hostile environment for infection and the most friendly and safe environment possible for students and staff. We believe our effort will make Westhoff ISD one of the safest, healthiest campuses and employers in the region.

Once again thank you everyone involved in helping to support our students learning, health and safety as well as the health and safety of our staff. A special thanks to our School Board for providing us direction and the resources needed and to our parents for entrusting your child to us.

Sincerely,

David Kennedy

Westhoff Superintendent
