Thank You Hunt Elementary School

Dear Editor,

The power of children and their compassion for homeless animals has resulted in another amazing outcome for Cuero’s pet shelter – Pet Adoptions of Cuero. A unique fundraising event was created by Sheena Vahalik at Hunt Elementary School. She invited all the classes at the school to compete in a penny drive called “Pennies for Pets”.

The children were told to collect as many pennies or coins as they could for a donation to the shelter.  All during the month of February the coins were brought in -  in Ziploc bags, plastic water bottles, boxes and catchalls to be added to their classroom “pot”. The classroom that brought in the most funds would receive a “Pet Party” complete with refreshments and lots of cuddly puppies to hold.

The event closed last weekend and over $1069-plus was accumulated.  The winning classroom was Mrs. Meredith’s 2nd grade class. Over 100 pounds of coins were collected and literally wheelbarrowed out to the bank. Special thanks also to all the tellers at Trust Texas Bank for counting the funds to be deposited in the Pet Adoptions of Cuero account.

From the team at Pet Adoptions: We are so honored and appreciative of the children (many forfeited their allowances to help out), their parents, family and friends, their teachers, and the  school staff for this awesome contribution.

Only in Cuero – a town that truly knows how to “give back” could such a win-win event take place.
