Westhoff ISD moving ahead with annual Veterans Day program

Dear Editor,

The year 2020 is one that most of us are ready to see be over. In the education field, dealing with the pandemic of COVID-19 has brought us challenges we have never dealt with before.

This brings us to Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2020. I have put much thought, prayers, and soul searching into how to approach Veterans Day this year. The easiest and maybe the smartest decision would be to cancel our program for this year. However, I am sometimes accused of not being the smartest or of not looking for the easiest way out of a situation.

During this year with all of the civil unrest, the split in our Nation, and the uncertainty of our Country’s future, I believe we must stand strong and set the example for the youth of our Nation.

Veterans Day is the perfect platform to not only honor you as a Veteran, but to instill the patriotism so needed in our youth who will be the future of our Nation.

For these reasons I am moving forward with our Veterans Day program to honor each and every one of you. We only have our students for a short time to mold and lead them in the right direction. Patriotism is so lacking in parts of our Nation. I am so thankful to be a part of Westhoff I.S.D. where our students not only talk about it but live and practice it.

In today’s time with all of us facing the pandemic of COVID-19 I truly understand the concern and health risk you are faced with. In fact I encourage you to not attend this year if your health is already compromised or may be compromised. If for health concerns you are not able to attend we look forward to seeing you next year.

Invitations will be sent out in the next two weeks. I just wanted to share my thoughts and give you ample time to think about it. On this day we will continue to practice our health and safety protocols with masks, daily temperature checks and social distancing as much as possible. I would never ask or expect you risk your life to attend our program since you have already risked it for our Nation to make it possible for us to even honor you on Veterans Day. However if you feel compelled to join us, you are more than welcome and the students are always excited to serve and honor you.

Sincerely,

David Kennedy
