DeWitt County Sheriff's Office Deputy Santa

Body
Christmas time is just around the corner. The De Witt County Sheriff's Office will again be sponsoring the Deputy Santa Program for the needy children of this county. In the 26 years that Deputy Santa has been in operation, we have helped many needy children in our county have a wonderful, Merry Christmas. We wish to continue to provide for the needy children throughout De Witt County. Our efforts have taken us from one end of the county to the other and throughout all of our communities. We would like to thank all of our contributors for the past 26 years, and we hope your donations this year will help satisfy the needs of the children in our community. We are asking parents of needy children to sign up those children, ages 16 and under.

Abbott: Battle continues over vouchers

Body
As time runs out next week on the fourth special session, Gov. Greg Abbott said he will continue to fight for school choice, despite the Texas House once again decisively rejecting it when 21 Republicans largely from rural districts joined Democrats in stripping it from a $7.6 billion education bill. The Austin American-Statesman reported it is unclear what Abbott’s next move will be.

God first....Heavenly Father, why is it that we tend to hold so tightly to the things of this world? We know in our hearts that everything we have is only by Your grace and generousity. May we learn to hold everthing loosely, knowing it is only borrowed. (For we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can carry nothing out.--1 Timothy 6:7) Thank You for all that we have been given as we pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Many of you may (or may not) have noticed I left the paper in October. I left because I was at a crossroads of sorts and wasn’t sure which path to take. While the path I took initially is still proving to be an option for me, something drew me back to reporting. Maybe it is my nosey nature or my inquisitiveness or the fact I found something I love doing.

Dear Editor, I am writing on behalf of the Victoria Fine Arts Association (VFAA) to express our deepest gratitude for the invaluable support extended towards our signature fundraising event, 'A Morning in La La Land' Jazz Brunch on November 12 at the Victoria Country Club. The generous support from sponsors, ticket holders, those that purchased tables and our hard working board of directors played an instrumental role in making this event a resounding success, and for that, we are truly thankful. The symphony of jazz melodies that graced the Victoria Country Club, including local favorites, the Dave & Catt Duo and Grammy-nominated artist, Cyrille Aimée, was an unforgettable experience for all attendees.

Legislature gets back to work in fourth special session

Body
The Texas Legislature, conceived as a part-time body to meet every other year for 140 days, is now in its record fifth session (counting the regular session). When the impeachment trial of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is included, legislators have been in Austin pretty much the entire year, as the Texas Tribune noted. While legislators are paid just $7,200 a year in salary, per diem payments – meant to cover their expenses while in Austin – have mounted. If the fourth special session goes a full 30 days, taxpayers will have spent $4.8 million keeping lawmakers in Austin.

GOD first...Heavenly Father, on days when everything seems to go wrong and we lose sight of the things that really matter in our daily lives, help us to remember to take a moment to stop what we are doing, take a deep breath, and pray. Help us to reach deep into our faith, strength, and spirit when we need to reach out to You. Joy is knowing that You are always with us and knowing we are safely in the arms of Your Amazing Grace. We pray in the name of our dear Savior, Jesus. Amen. Pray for those who are in need of strength and comfort while in pain, distress, or sorrow.
