Dave Roever, a Vietnam veteran, international motivational speaker, founder of the Roever Foundation, and Cuero native, spoke to Cuero High School students Aug. 23 at the Performing Arts Center. Roever’s story, “From Tragedy to Triumph”, revolves around his own life; at the height of the Vietnam War, Roever joined the U.S. Navy and served as a river boat gunner until tragedy occurred.
As stated on his web page, eight months into his tour of duty in Vietnam, Roever was burned beyond recognition when a phosphorous grenade he was poised to throw exploded in his hand. The ordeal left him hospitalized for fourteen months, where he underwent numerous major surgeries.
Fifty years after beginning his journey as a speaker, Roever is still out telling his story of tragedy, hope, and triumph in the town where he grew up, visiting Cuero High School as a speaker for the first time.
“This meant so much to me– and to be received like they did today,” said Roever.
