Boys and Girls Club working through pandemic

As we’ve seen, navigating through this pandemic isn’t so easy, but the Boys and Girls Club of DeWitt County has been pushing through to ensure the safety of their kiddos.

Megan Boehl, executive director of the club, and Annemarie Leslie-Mees, unit director, took a moment to share the status of how the BGCDC has been adapting. The club was closed from March 19 until August 17 in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“We decided to wait and see what the school was going to do since we normally follow the school schedule anyway–we just wanted to make sure we were kind of following their guidelines,” said Mees. “It’s a full day schedule during the summer, so it was really strange not having our summer program–we have usually have a lot going on.”

Mees wasn’t the only one who missed out on the summer club programs. Kaylee Rogers,11, has been coming to the club for at least five years.  

“[I was sad] I didn’t get to come here in the summer,” she said, “because I didn’t get to see my friends and the staff members because I missed them.”

A summer off didn’t stop the BGCDC from coming right back, even if things had to change.

“Preparing to open, we had to do staff training and do all the policies and procedures and make sure that we were definitely following regulations before we opened the door,” said Mees.
