Who’s to say what’s possible when communities come together for something bigger than themselves? Yorktown and Nordheim showed what it means to lend a helping hand to someone in need by holding the Charles Schroeder cook-off benefit on Aug. 23-24 at the Nordheim Shooting Club Hall. August 24 was also Schroeder’s 23rd wedding anniversary with his wife, Mariah.

On July 11, Schroeder was admitted to DeTar Hospital in Victoria with an illness. Five days later, a stroke led to him being moved to San Antonio Methodist Hospital.

Through the difficulties endured by Schroeder, his family and everyone close to him, this benefit was formed. Even before the cook-off started, they had exceeded their initial goal of $25,000.

“It’s very emotional,” Gay Hobbs said, Schroeder’s mother.

“I feel very blessed to live in such a small community. Yorktown and Nordheim are different cities, but everybody pulled together. Something like this is gonna help them make it through until hopefully he can come home and maybe go back to work.”
