1898 was an extremely thrilling year in Yorktown, Texas. Judge Rudolph Kleberg who had been a resident of Yorktown served as a county judge. He then went on to serve in the House of Representative for the United States of America. Judge Kleberg wrote a history of Yorktown and of Cuero, Texas. He interviewed residents who remembered the beginnings. He gave a detailed list of businesses in his report. He states that in 1898, the population of Yorktown was about 360. He lists the cost of necessary supplies for the citizens. He stated that there were 3 general merchandise stores, 5 fancy groceries, 2 dry goods, 1 drug store, 1 tin ware, 1 hardware, 2 lumber yards, 2 saddleries, 2 millineries, 2 barber shops, 2 tailors, 3 butchers, 3 hotels, 2 beer agencies, 1 bottling works, 1 confectionery, 6 Physicians, 13 named saloons, 2 livery stables, 2 undertakers with a hearse, 3 windmill agencies, 3 cotton gins, and 1 newspaper. He also listed the churches and organizations of the city. As a muse, it would be interesting to compare those of 1898 to those of 2023, in an excel document. His writings have been reprinted numerous times by the Yorktown Historical Society. Currently, the last book printed is available in the Historical Museum.

Former NFL player Greg Ellis heads Tigers for Christ’s Field of Faith event

The ‘Tigers for Christ Field of Faith” event will be held on Wednesday, October 18 at 7 p.m. at the Goliad Tiger Stadium. Former NFL player Greg Ellis will share his story of hope and faith. Greg Ellis is the head football coach at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) in Waxahachie, Texas, a position he has held since 2022. Ellis played professionally as a defensive end for 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the North Carolina Tar Heels, and was recognized as an All-American. He was selected in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys and played for the Cowboys for 11 seasons, from 1998 to 2008. He also played a season, in 2009, for the Oakland Raiders. Ellis was the head football coach at Texas College in Tyler, Texas from 2020 to 2021.

Verena Doehrmann Albrecht celebrates 103rd Birthday

Verena Doehrman recently celebrated her 103 birthday with her family and friends at Whispering Oaks Rehab & Nursing. Verena was born Sept. 19, 1920. As a devout Catholic, a mass was held for her birthday and was attended by her family and the friends she has made at the center.

World War II Veteran Requests 100 Cards for 100th Birthday

Today, Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham challenged the State of Texas to show their support for the U.S. Army Veteran and Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home resident Ethelyn Szad Bell on her 100th birthday. Mrs. Bell's centennial celebration will be on October 4th and she has requested to receive 100 cards for this wonderful milestone. Mrs. Bell began her service in March of 1945 at the age of 21. After completing the Basic Training Course for Army Nurses, Mrs. Bell served with the Army Nurse Corps in the Philippines and Nagoya, Japan during World War II. During her time in the service, she rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant and was honorably discharged in July of 1946. After her time serving in the U.S. Army, Mrs. Bell continued giving back to her community by working at the Veterans Administration Hospital in McKinney, Texas. A blind date led to meeting her husband and fellow U.S. Army Veteran, Charles Bell. Together, they moved to Prosper, Texas where they raised a son and daughter. Mrs. Bell worked as a dedicated elementary school nurse in McKinney for many years until she retired at the age of 55.
