The Cuero Record

They say teams to remember play in December. Here in Cuero, Gobbler fans often get the luxury of watching the Mean Green make some deep playoff runs. This Gobbler football season has been nothing short of amazing. The passion and support that this community shows the Fightin’ Gobblers is truly unbelievable.

Last Friday, every single bit of it was on display with a sea of the green flocking to the San Antonio Alamodome to watch Cuero have a chance at their 12th career state title appearance. Standing in the way was a familiar foe in the undefeated Wimberley Texans, who lost to the Gobblers at the same venue a year ago.

In the second half, it was 24 unanswered points over a 13-minute stretch from the Texans that would ultimately lead to the deciding outcome of the game. Wimberley defeated Cuero 42-36 and advanced to the state title game against the Carthage Bulldogs.

Momentum is big in the game of football and starting out it swayed back and forth early. After each team opened their first possession with the opposing defense forcing a three and out, the Texans and Gobblers would exchange scores up until halftime. The difference being the Texans settling for a field goal, and a huge late 20-yard touchdown reception from Daylon Gibbs with just 00:34 remaining in the opening half. Gibbs had a marvelous day and was huge for the Gobblers offensive attack reeling in five passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Cuero received their other first-half touchdowns on a two-yard Mason Notaro run, Tycen Williams’s six-yard run, and a separate Gibbs touchdown reception from 18 yards out. That extra point attempt would be blocked by Wimberley and taken back for two points. The Mean Green took a 27-18 lead back to the locker room and were due to receive the second-half kickoff.

Cuero opened the second half with a 24-yard William Carbonara field goal that ate up four minutes and 33 seconds. It was Carbonara’s first and only field goal attempt this season. From there, momentum completely shifted in favor of Wimberley. The Texans gained their first lead since the 4:42 mark in the opening quarter late in the third and continued to mount onto their lead.
