Tension was high this past Friday night as the Cuero Gobblers faced off against the Smithville Tigers in a battle to claim the district champion title. Both teams had something to prove, not only to themselves but to their communities and only one was coming out victorious. Earning their title as district champs, the Gobblers outscored the Tigers 53-25.

The Gobblers found out early that this game was going to be tough when the Tigers scored in the first few seconds of the game. Getting into gear, they quickly recovered but they needed to stay on top of their game if they were going to win this one. Ending the first half with a score of 12-11, an adjustment needed to be made. Going into the second half the Gobblers were able to apply the changes necessary to secure their trophy.

“Yeah, you know, we knew it was going to be a tough ball game. They’re a pretty good team. They got a lot of skilled kids, and they were hungry, assistant head coach Adam Arroyo said.

“Smithville hasn’t won a district championship in 50 years so they were after it tonight. They gave us some trouble a little bit upfront and we just made mistakes ourselves. You know it was nice to go into the second half with a one-point lead but at halftime, we made some adjustments. We knew what they were going to give us; they weren’t going to change their defense and we were just going to attack them with the run--–be more physical and run the ball, which we were able to do,” Arroyo said.
