The Cuero Record
There are not many schools out there that can come close to comparing with the tradition of the Cuero Gobblers. With a state championship appearance in each of the last five decades and four state titles under their belt, tradition is a vital component around Cuero.
This past Thursday, March 24, Cuero ISD officially introduced a new member of the Gobbler family, naming Jerod Fikac athletic director and head football coach. After unanimous approval by the board at approximately 12:01 p.m. the meeting was adjourned by 12:06 p.m.
Fikac, who grew up in Shiner, is excited to be back near his old stomping grounds. “To be back down in this area I am so excited. This is where I want to raise my family. I am just blessed and honored to get the opportunity to raise my kids in this type of community,” said Fikac.
Entering his sixth season as a head coach next season, Fikac has compiled a 34-24 career record. His first stop came in San Saba. Taking over after a 0-10 season in San Saba, Fikac helped squash a 16 game losing skid in his first season, (2017-18), going 3-7. The following season Fikac helped lead the Armadillos to a 2A-Divison II state semifinals appearance after going 14-1. Fikac was awarded Dave Campbell’s Texas HS Coach of the Year in 2A for his 2018-19 season.
Fikac then moved on to Georgetown East View, a 5A school, where he had been the head coach for the past three seasons. Going to back-to-back playoff appearances in his first two seasons, the Patriots missed a post-season birth last year. Fikac also has spent time in Wimberley, a place Cuero fans should be very familiar with. He was a part of the Wimberley coaching staff when they brought home state titles in 2005 and 2011.
