In a surprising move, Cuero Gobblers AD/head football coach, Jack Alvarez, will be leaving Cuero after two seasons at the helm. Alvarez was named the AD/head football coach at Marshall HS, just north of Carthage. Alvarez led the Gobblers to their 16th state semi-finals appearance in program history this past season, going 13-2 overall, 5-0 in district. During his two years as the Gobbler's head coach, he went 18-8 overall.

Cuero ISD superintendent, Micah Dyer, discussed what is next for the Gobblers sports program. “We will sit down with coach Alvarez tomorrow and discuss his exit strategy, and will probably name an interim athletic director that is on the staff. From there we will begin the search process.” When asked if the news comes as a surprise, Dyer notes, “It was a surprise. This was a move he did not make in haste. It was a deal that checked off some boxes for his family, because all of his children and grandchildren live in East Texas. It puts them closer to aging family members so they can be helpful to their family.”
