The Schuenemann family is inviting the community to donate blood in memory of Neil Schuenemann on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Nordheim.  This will be the 17th Annual Neil Schuenemann Memorial Blood Drive.

Neil was a Nordheim resident who died in 2006. “He was the type of person who would do anything for anybody. It’s hard to believe he has been gone for 17 years,” Lori Green, Neil’s sister explained.

Neil had two daughters, a large family, and tons of friends that played a huge role in his life. He had a diesel mechanics degree and loved to work on all sorts of engines. He was always willing to help others with whatever they needed, from busted water pipes to any sort of vehicle issue. Cars, trucks, tractors, and everything in between.

Neil was also an avid blood donor. He donated as often as he could and thought it was something that was extremely important.

When Neil died, his family decided that having a blood drive in his memory was something that they wanted to do to honor him. The Nordheim community and the surrounding communities fully supported it. The family started calling friends and family, spreading the news and had a great turnout. The blood drive continues to have good turnouts.

“There were some years where there were so many donors they brought two buses,” said Green. “It would be important to Neil to continue to help as many people as possible because that’s the type of person he was. The blood drive just seemed like the thing to do and blood donations save lives every day.”

The blood mobile will be set up off of Broadway next to City Hall in Nordheim. Due to the limited time the blood mobile will be available, appointments are preferred. For more information or to schedule an appointment, go to www.southtexasblood.org. The qualifications to be a blood donor are simple. You must be in good general health, at least 17 years of age (or 16 with parental consent) and weigh at least 110 lbs (or 120 lbs if 16 years old). Donors must present a photo ID or other form of identification.

“This will be the 17th year that the community has helped make this drive a huge success. Thank you in advance,” Green said.
